Sri Lanka - Packing List Backpack

Time and again, listeners ask us how you can travel with so little. I'll list what's in my backpack.

Clothes

  • 2 T-shirts (short sleeve)
  • 1 Strap shirt
  • 1 long flutter skirt - no link, because I sewed it myself (which was white at first and became less and less white as time went by. After the holidays I dyed it ochre-yellow with Sri Lanka turmeric).
  • 1 pair of long linen trousers - no link, because I sewed them myself
  • 1 pair of socks (only needed on the flights and on the Adams Peak climb)
  • 1 bikini (can also be worn as underwear)
  • 1 Long-sleeved shirt
  • 3 knickers
  • 1 bustier (bras are so not my thing...)
  • 1 very light Rain jacket
  • 1 scarf for all occasions (on the plane as protection against the cold, on the beach as a skirt, in the hostel as a little dress when I have to quickly scurry down the corridor to the toilet).
  • 1 linen blouse (for the beautiful moments, never really used, but worn on the last two days because I just had it with me)
  • FlipFlops (eternally old, for showering and actually also often for travelling)
  • Barefoot shoes, i.e. sturdy shoes for walking and especially on the plane against cold feet.

Cosmetics & so

  • Wooden hairbrush (a small comb would have done, but I had the brush new and liked it that way).
  • Nail scissors
  • Bamboo toothbrush
  • Toothpick
  • Tweezers
  • a jar of homemade coconut oil toothpaste (Recipe and Info to this)
  • a jar of homemade coconut oil deodorant (the best ever!!!) Recipe here
  • 3 jars of Riblusa, our marigold ointment for all occasions (as face cream, as natural wound plaster, as day cream...) Here you can get our Riblusa.
  • small sample of sunscreen SPF 30 (I don't like sunscreen, but didn't know if I could afford not to like it in Sri Lanka)
  • Lady Cup
  • a bar of soap for skin and hair
  • half a bar of curd soap for the laundry and, in an emergency, also for the skin and hair

Technology

Oh dear. Our nagging issue. We are so tech-savvy and would love to lug around a whole handcart full of laptops, cameras and quadrocopters. But when we're backpacking, we have to limit ourselves. So here is the result of our limitation:

  • Mobile phone (iPhone)
  • small camera (Sony DSC-HX90V)
  • Single-lens reflex camera (Nikon D5100) and the Lens  Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED VR II lens (72 mm filter thread, image scale)
  • ebook reader (Kobo)
  • 1 portable mini keyboard for diary writing on the mobile phone (Logitech Keys-To-Go)
  • DJI Osmo Mobile (had Gerd in his hand or on his backpack)
  • Charging cable for all the things and USB charging plug, a 3-socket (which we then left in some hotel)
  • a small powerbank (giveaway from mum-in-law's bank), enough for 2 mobile phone charges
  • Headphones for mobile phones
  • Lavalier-Microphone for the podcast (Rode smartLAV+)
  • Memory cards for the cameras
  • External memory for iPhone
  • Sim card for Sri Lanka
  • a small Metal box (from a lunch box set) for all the above-mentioned small stuff

First-aid kit

  • Arnica C200
  • Headache and toothache tablets
  • B12 tablets
  • 3 plasters (which I have been carrying around for ages and have also brought home again)
  • Mint oil
  • Antibiotic (I haven't taken an antibiotic for almost 20 years, and I want to keep it that way. Nevertheless, I took it with me as a precaution because I had a dental treatment shortly before, which was quite painful. And I never needed the tablets).
  • Perenterol, for the treatment of acute diarrhoeal diseases, but also for the prevention of travellers' diarrhoea.

Otherwise

For some links there are here a few info!
What is missing from our list? What are you packing? And: what is too much?
