013 - Sri Lanka - Relaxation in our little oasis

Relaxation in our little oasis

We wake up in perfect peace. Only the chirping of birds accompanies us. We are refreshed, the children's faces still glowing in colourful reddish-brown and we decide to stay by the pool. The whole day. Because there are plenty of shady spots here in the villa.

Gerd enjoys the many squirrels, Kathi and Moppi find the monitor lizards in the garden every now and then, and if it's too boring for a moment, they go into the pool to cool off, play ball and then straight back into the hammock. Thanks to free wifi, everyone reads or listens to what they like, I watch a few world travel vlogs, Kathi surfs on Instagram and tries to talk to Tim on the phone, and Moppi has a special surprise waiting for him: he is allowed to take the landlord's tuktuk for a spin.

They drive to the next town of Galle to get new contact lenses (he had lost his in the high waves of Tangalle) and on the way back he was allowed to drive a tuktuk all by himself. He was beaming like a honey cake horse when he came back. Gerd went along and filmed everything. One of Moppi's wishes came true. To drive a tuktuk himself. Gerd said afterwards that I should be glad I wasn't there. Of course, the traffic showed no consideration for my tuktuk newcomer son. Everything as usual. Pure chaos. Moppi proudly announced that he too had overtaken a tuktuk. Whereas here you can really overtake anywhere, on the left, on the right, and if they could, even over the top. Sometimes it seems to me like in a film with Bruce Willis, where the taxis float in the air.

On the one hand, I am grateful to have both my men back safe and sound, but I am even happier to see the sparkle in Alex's eyes.
Before the men went on their big trip, the landlord here gave us a landing net and a sponge. He asked if we could quickly remove the leaves from the pool and scrub off the bacon rim. Of course we do that quickly. The bacon rim is a one-time thing. The leaves seem to be a never-ending story here. No sooner are the leaves out than the wind sweeps in the next load of leaves. But what the hell, that way the day has a purpose. And I like to do it. If you don't have to do it, you're happy to do it.

And what can I say, suddenly it's evening. Shortly before 5 o'clock we are hungry, get dressed and head for the "city". We look for a small vegetarian-vegan restaurant, which was recommended to me, and also find a very nice strolling mile with small shops, bars and restaurants. I'm still looking for a nice pair of trousers for myself, but I can't find any. Most of them are too short. And Kathi wanted a dress, but she can't find one either. Most things here are very similar to things from Vietnamese market stalls in Germany.

In the end, it doesn't matter. I would like to buy some souvenirs, but I can't find anything there either. Maybe tomorrow evening in Galle?
We eat very well, for a change from curry and rice, and after a small starter (wholemeal toast with a little hummus) I realise that I am already full again. I listen to my stomach and am very grateful for it. Should I even lose weight during these holidays? Well, that would be something. It would definitely be necessary.
We walk back to the villa, along the noisy and roaring main street and look forward to the small alley that leads to the hotel. The funny thing here is that there is a light switch on each street lamp. So you can switch the street lamps on and off individually. We haven't yet figured out why this is so, but we find it funny. Unfortunately, when we arrive, all the lights are already on. So we don't have to do anything. Of course, Moppi still has to test every switch once.

We trudge up the road, fall into bed dead tired shortly after 8 and fall asleep immediately. At least I think so, because I was gone immediately. What the others were still doing, I can't say. In any case, I had to finish this lazy day with a lot of sleep.
I like this rhythm, that you get up with the sun and go to bed with the sunset. That way we get enough sleep, enough rest and are nicely rested.
