Where is the culture in the air-conditioning bus?

We wake up early. And can therefore have breakfast in peace. Our English landlord advises us not to go to Wadduwa by train. We should rather take the bus. Air-conditioned from Galle. We talk for a while and pass fifteen minutes by fifteen minutes. We all jump into the pool again and cool down. Sometime shortly before noon, we climb down the steep road for the last time, packed with our backpacks, and get on the next bus to Galle.

Here we quickly find the air-conditioned bus. It is much smaller, much more comfortable and cooled down to ice cold. A few more well-dressed people get on, traders come through with mangoes, pastries and all sorts of things we don't know. We only buy the mango. At some point we set off. The bus driver once again drives like a hangman, but we have long since got used to that. What we miss in this bus, however, is the authenticity. Everything is dignified. Even the music is much quieter. Everyone is dressed in suits and nice clothes and I miss the liveliness that I have come to love and appreciate so much in Sri Lankan public transport. We drive for about 30 minutes and when we get off, we find ourselves back in the incredibly ugly city of Wadduwa. Loud, smelly, dirty. But what the heck, somewhere behind the walls with little squirrels scampering around will probably be our Airbnb accommodation.

We wander around in the midday heat, buy warm rotis and end up at the stand in a Russian beach bar. Here we cool down with a few colas, nibble our rotis and order two tuktuks to take us to the hotel. After a funny odyssey through the beach area, we finally find our Airbnb and arrive in paradise. We move into our own house and have a large pool almost to ourselves. While we swim in the pool, we look out through palm trees to the sea.

We enjoy ourselves and just manage to walk the 40 metres to the neighbouring beach bar in the evening for a wonderful meal.

The evening ends with a romantic sunset and the sound of the waves. Shortly before 8 o'clock we are full and tired and crawl into our little house. Within a few minutes I fall asleep. I assume that the kids have been awake longer and are still surfing the internet. But I don't hear anything more about it, because the fresh air, the sea, the travelling and the good food give me an incredible deep sleep.
