016 - Sri Lanka - Food, Sea, Pool, Sea, Pool and Food

Längerer Beitrag – schneller Überblick:

Food, sea, pool, sea, pool and food

I did not sleep well. I dreamt of a pregnancy. In the dream itself I am deeply distressed about it, as all my travel dreams burst like soap bubbles. I wake up and worry that I will miss the bun-baker's tuk-tuk. A glance at the clock tells me it's only just before half past 3 and I can sleep peacefully. At 6 and 7 I wake up again, half past seven I get up and walk out onto the street. The tuktuk with the bread rolls has to come sometime. Only when I see the women at the side of the road with banknotes in their hands, waiting calmly, do I join them, watch them all and wait too.

A completely emaciated cow with a broken leg hobbles past me. Dogs are playing with the rubbish and rummaging for scraps. A few metres further on, two young men are burning their household waste. The fact that they also burn PET bottles and all sorts of other things worries me. I wonder if they will ever learn that this is neither healthy for the environment nor for them. I walk a little further so as not to inhale the fumes.

At some point the green tuktuk with its unmistakable melody comes and stops. Everybody buys breads, rolls and the locals even rolled and sandwiched things, which I better don't take, because the vendor smilingly says to me: Sri-Lanka-spicy... I understand. This is not for weak Europeans.

Kathi has already set the table, we have a nice breakfast and then we go to the sea. Then into the pool. Then back into the sea and on into the pool. And the day is already over. We watch the pool boy at his work, which he does very precisely. We watch the neighbouring house being built or walls being torn down. And we realise that a day can also pass wonderfully with lazy idleness. The sun is beating down like crazy, and we can cool off in the water.

In the evening, the same programme: Jani Rest right next to our Airbnb. This is the beach bar from yesterday. He cooks us daal, rice, French fries and Gerd takes calemares. We listen to cool Reaggae music by Bob Marley, the waves crash on the beach, the sun goes down, it doesn't get more kitschy and immediately more beautiful than this and we are happy. We play Uno. Kathi splashes open a Coke and we all have some. And we watch the dogs playing with each other. All in all, a wonderful end to our penultimate day of holiday.

We walk the few metres barefoot back to the cottage and sit comfortably on the two sofas. Someone starts reading out jokes from the internet and we tell each other stupid jokes, laughing here and there, but sometimes the jokes are so stupid that we only manage a tired smile.

Eventually this day is over and we crawl into our beds, not without having started the air conditioning first.
