We talk about home and home. What is it actually like when you travel around like we do and say funny things like "home is where we park it"?
For us it's quite clear: when we see more Bernese number plates on the cars or snow-covered mountains in the distance, we are in the homeland. But also when we drive through the east of Germany.
We simply invite ourselves to friends' and family's houses. A text message "We're nearby" and minutes later we're sitting at the coffee table, chatting about old and new times. We walk bravely ("Wer nichts dart, der darf nichts hoffen." - Friedrich Schiller) on frozen lakes (and Brandenburg, for example, has plenty of those!) and simply park our home on our hosts' properties. We spend the days and evenings with wonderful people.
We spend the nights in our cosy home-on-wheels, a small and wonderful retreat for us. And the best thing about it: none of the visitors have to get stressed out, no one has to remove ironing clothes or exercise bikes from guest rooms.
So: Home is indeed more of a place-based feeling. It comes on suddenly. It tingles in the stomach and when we leave it stings a little. Our eyes get moist and we feel a kind of "hiding under the covers" feeling.
Home is - and we both realise this - rather our Felix. But also where we are together. Where we can deposit our toothbrush for a short time and plug in the chargers. Where we can pull the blanket over our legs and be together.
