Great Journey Day 488
Sea at last. We spent the first day of last year by the sea, and the first of the new year as well. Okay, a few thousand kilometres separate us from our beloved Koroni. The temperature, the colour of the water and the scent of the flora are also less intense.
Even though we are now enjoying the winter here at the Baltic Sea, we are missing a bit of the scent of fig trees, the warm sand and the sun tanning the tip of our noses.
Why again are we in the north? Why again do we always go to the strangest places at the wrong time? We already asked ourselves this question in Turkey at the height of summer. And yes, even now we doubt our decision-making competence.
Oh yes, one of our dear friends lives on Rügen, we want to visit her, celebrate the New Year with her (quite unplanned for her) and stay another week. Lars, her neighbour and Sweden expert, takes us under his wing and just one hour later our notebook is full of more information and we are full of anticipation.
On Rügen we wander around, go to small harbours, trudge to the beach of Binz, notice that we are not alone here at all, join the campfire and "hot sea buckthorn juice" stand and are right in the middle of the winter Baltic Sea feeling.
Which would be really great if Peter (is he actually responsible for that?) would provide crisp temperatures and let the Baltic Sea freeze. I remember experiencing that once when I was a child. That was impressive. We don't want to stay here forever, so maybe we'll still be lucky.
