In Luxembourg, it's like here in Switzerland - a mix of languages. People speak Luxembourgish, which sounds Flemish. I understand a word now and then. But I don't understand the context. Then they speak a lot of French. Well, good night Marie - I don't understand a word. And then German too. It's good that my workshop participants all know German. In cafés and public areas, German seems to be non-existent (or ignored).
The good thing about my current job is that I work in the local daily newspaper and get all the information I need. So I learn a lot about motorway and tunnel construction (and their 30-year construction period - BER says hello), about border crossers, about the people who prefer to work in state institutions instead of private ones, and I listen when they report on the north, the south, the east and the west of a country that is one of the smallest countries in the world.
We laugh with our colleagues when they talk about their mountains, er, hills and base camp before climbing the hill "Kneiff", which is the highest mountain, or elevation, at 560m above zero. Yet d'Stadt, as Luxembourg City is affectionately abbreviated, is also already 200-400 metres above sea level. And yet they claim that it is a very mountainous country here. I think I'll have to show them some pictures tomorrow of the mountains on my doorstep ??. Here in Esch sur Alzette it is once again quieter. Rue de l'Alzette seems to be on a river (GoogleMaps says so) - nothing to see. The shopping street is made out of a shopping mail set: H&M, C&A and NanuNana. The rest you can imagine. There is a baker and a Chinese restaurant. In search of some charm, I find a small park where the artist asks the gardener to take his cue from the art objects when cutting the hedges. Do they succeed? Conditionally.
It's good that my Airbnb is directly above a kebab stand with exactly one vegetarian dish. So I don't have to think about it for long.
Luxembourg, I'll give you another chance sometime.
