Great Journey Day 489
We know how to deal with fog. In Fürth we walked through clouds of fog (our children called it a Christmas walk), in Brandenburg we didn't even get out of the car when there was another "soup" wafting outside the window.
"Let's go to Rügen, I'm sure it's nice there!"
But Rügen can also do fog. Pure fog, fog to drizzle, fog to rain and fog to wind. And what about us? We dress for the fog, dive in and start hiking. Felix, the fog-coloured one, hides and waits for us fogged-in people with a heated living room.
And because the whole day is drizzly and foggy, we sit in Putgarten on our parking space, look out over the car park, lean into our cosy corners and read. The "plan" would have been Cape Arkona.
At some point we pull ourselves together, go now, put on our rain gear and head for the chalk cliffs. Unfortunately, neither of us knows what's going wrong with our calendar, but it's getting dark and we start walking in the twilight, completely out of our minds. A fantastic idea.
And once again we are surprised, gifted and our evening to night hike is wonderful. (The weather app shows one or two rain-free hours for tomorrow morning, so maybe we'll dare to do this hike again in daylight).
We hike up to the lighthouse with its distinctive light signal (3 x short, 1 x nothing), look briefly into the dark fog that sounds like the crashing of waves and ask ourselves why everything here is lit up in colour.
And a little later they realise that the "why question" usually doesn't really produce clever answers after all.
