Great Journey 🏍 Day 251
Not far from Plovdiv, the road winds up into the last foothills of the Rhodope Mountains: a castle is on our agenda: Assen's Fortress.
The approach is winding, the view from there is great. Worth a short stop on the way to Plovdiv.
We sit down on the observation deck at the top, I take out my digital guidebook and read aloud. There are supposed to have been 30 rooms here. All we can see is the church and old walls, almost 3 metres thick. Whoever lived up here must have been very athletic. Or had to be driven up in a horse-drawn carriage. Which, by the way, is no longer allowed today, with the carriage. (See traffic sign)
The car park attendant is friendly, looks after our luggage and has a second mainstay: after the castle visit, he tries to sell his really delicious ice cream to the man, the woman and especially the children. With great success!
But now it's on to Plovdiv, the pearl of Bulgaria!
