Great Journey 🏍 Day 193
Methoni Castle.
The good thing about slow travel, as I affectionately call our stuck way of travelling, is that we really do look at every little corner in this area.

These days we were in Methoni, a neighbouring village of Koroni. In Koroni, the castle is freely accessible, the Methoni fortress is a museum and therefore unfortunately closed at the moment. But you can walk around it (or swim, which we refrained from doing).

Both castles or fortresses were built by Venetians at that time (must have been before our arrival, about 800 years ago). They called Koroni and Methoni the "eyes of the Republic of Venice". All ships returning from the east had to stop here to report pirates. At some point, however, the Venetians left (okay, they didn't succeed against the Ottomans) and the fortresses rotted away.

In Methoni it is much better preserved, unfortunately we were denied access because of "C". In addition to our half-round hike, we briefly sent out our auxiliary flying eye to catch a glimpse from above. We would have liked to have taken a guided tour, to have learned more and to have criss-crossed the castle. Maybe soon. We hope it will be possible again soon.
