Great Journey 🇳🇴 Day 555
Our favourite way to travel is by train. Yes, admittedly, we haven't really read much about it here in recent years. For reasons.
A trip on Nordlandsbanen has always been a little dream of ours. It is said to be one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world. (Small spoiler: so far nothing can compete with the train from Colombo to Kandy in Sri Lanka).
So we think about how best to go about it. We arrive in Bodø by ferry, see the train and wish for nothing more than to take the 729 km train to Trondheim. But what do we do with Felix?
And then the idea: we go to Trondheim by train and back by Hurtigruten (another wish list thing). Felix can take a break for a few days alongside other campers.
So we pack our only backpack for the first time and stand at the track an hour too early. No matter. Eventually we are allowed to board, sit in the almost empty train and travel for almost 10 hours through one of the most beautiful areas in Norway. We drive over the fjels (as the mountains are called here), rattle along the fjords (as the sea lakes are called here) and can't get enough of it.
We cross the Arctic Circle southwards one more time, see the endless expanse of the Saltfjellet Mountains and dive into the real Nordic winter one last time.
We try to take pictures, but realise that we would rather fill our hearts with memories than the camera chip. A train ride that is truly miraculously beautiful and that we would do again in a heartbeat.
In the evening we arrive in Trondheim dog-tired and flat-footed, but that doesn't matter. Gerd has booked us a permanent shower with sleeping accommodation. That's what we call a Vanlifer hotel room. And we are simply delighted about this wonderful day!
Tip: there is a wonderful report on the railway line in the media library: "Winter Journey to the Arctic Circle".
