20 May 2019

As a child, I visited the former concentration camps Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen. And I still remember the visits clearly. I'm not sure if it's good to show children human incineration ovens. For months I was depressed. And helpless, because there was nothing I could do, so many years after the war. And I could not really come to terms with my pain until today. Only "park" it in a corner deep in my heart. I still feel helpless today as I walk through the Bergen-Belsen memorial. But: next to the depressing history of the 85,000 murdered people, I feel a small liveliness. Spring makes everything green, the birds chirp in the evening sun. Life! Mindful and full of respect for the victims. And looking forward: Life may not go on for the victims, but it does for the survivors. We simply must not forget. The sad as well as the life-affirming!
