"Come on, let's go to the mountains for a bit!" The pensioner's programme (you remember, ankle-bend compulsory break) turns out to be a hammer excursion. We take the Matterhorn Express (äs Gondeli) up to the little Matterhorn, spend half the day at almost 4000 metres (no headache this time) and meet a Zermatt veteran who entertains us with the broadest smile in the world with stories about the mountains, about Zermatt and with his riddle about women in general and his own in particular.
Up here we also meet many Swiss guests who are just as taken with the beauty as we are. And we are even happily questioned by an Asian woman. And then this: "Oh, you are locals!" She reports that it is not so easy to come into contact with locals at these spots, mostly she only meets tourists.
When I run back and forth, up and down, my heart is pounding up to my throat, as if I had run a marathon. Not that I know what that would be like, but that's how I imagine it.
The altitude makes itself felt, the steps become smaller, the breath shorter. We look over to Italy, enjoy the "ä chli Bärge" and can't get enough of it.
I think if you could have taken a room up there, we would have stayed. Because our toothbrush always travels with us anyway.
