Great Journey 🏍 Day 324
Ganziantep, or as we connoisseurs say: Antep, is known for its variety of delicacies.
We immediately go exploring and are disappointed to 87.5 %. Holiday. Here too. Only one restaurant is open for the ignorant tourists. The chef, however, makes our gums (?) quiver: he enchants us and from now on we don't care what we missed at the other 87.5%.
We take our digestive walk on the castle, from where there is a view over the city of 2 million people. We only see beauty in the old town, on our way out of the hot Unesco city tomorrow we drive through dust, an incredible amount of dirt on the roadside, burning heaps of rubbish and a lot of factory-like buildings that look more than run-down but are still in operation.
We read that the Syrian children should go to school. But we also learn that it is precisely these children who work in the factories or have to work in order to contribute to the family income. We are saddened and realise once again how helpless we feel in the face of world politics. We travel through the country in sunshine and have a wonderful life, and not even a few metres away we do not even have the opportunity to take our own lives into our own hands.
So much for "Live your life!" or "You can do anything if you just want to."
Only those who were born in the "right", lucky place on our earth can say that.
We ourselves stand here between the chairs. Yes, we are blessed by the place of our birth. Then again, we are tempted to simply close our eyes. Because we almost can't stand it. Because it hurts us. And yet we want to look. Somehow.
