The time when my kids watched Harry Potter in an endless loop and I first "loved" all the novels and then also the films was a long time ago.
Today we visit one of the filming locations of the first parts of Harry Potter. What's funny is that neither of us knew it. I had a little pin on my wish list, yes, another castle. Alnwick Castle. We read that it's the second largest still standing in the kingdom. Yeah, that's nice.
We park on the mountain, within sight of the castle lit up at night.
In the morning, we are back in our element, standing at the entrance gate at 10 a.m. sharp (or a little earlier?), our ticket digitally on our smartphone. In the archway we read the event schedule for today: historical guided tour, broomstick training, film tour, archery and all sorts of other things.
I stop reading at Broomstick, this is my event. I immediately race across the square to the training ground. But I see mostly 4- to 8-year-olds waiting here. I'm a bit embarrassed now, so I stand at the edge for a while.
The training begins, the two witch professors do an excellent job. Broom safety first, safety posture, first mounting, curve training, braking manoeuvres. The kids do an excellent job. My heart is beating, I want to do it too! After 30 minutes the training is over, everyone has passed. Phew, that was close.
The historical tour is also quite nice. Gerd takes part in the film tour, while I lie on the grass again and watch one training session after the other.
It is simply divine how the witches and wizards do their job, how everyone completes the training. It's been a long time since I've had so much fun. I'll still be thanking Gerd in bed at night for this great day.
Oh yes, the castle is really beautiful. I'll have to take a look at the photos later.
