Great Journey 🏴 Day 647

We are a bit torn inside. Our son-in-law studied in Dundee. And of course he has nothing but good things to say. Should we go to Dundee, should we not?

Okay, we'll take a drive through. Of course, Dundee is known for its design museum. But we're not interested in fancy furniture and stuff like that. Actually, we're not really into all that design brimbamborium, even though we probably have to for professional reasons.

I've got it! There is an exhibition here, Dundee was the textile capital for many years, or rather a walk-in former textile factory. That's something! Gerd is delighted, I think.

Verdant Works is home to Scotland's Jute Museum. We are the only visitors, which once again means that we have the full attention of the staff. To begin with, we start with a double espresso, which proves to be important. Because the pace of Scottish English is furious. I would gladly put it on slow-mo.

The exhibition is an absolute blast, everywhere we can join in, everywhere we find great information, often with a wink. We hear voices from Dundee's heyday. We watch short video sequences and once again admire the huge machines. And we shake our heads at the working conditions in the late 19th and early 20th century.

What we miss here (as everywhere in the British Isles so far) is a critical view of the colonial period. We would find it quite pleasant to take a critical look at one's own history as well.

All in all, however, it was a super museum that totally inspired us both. (And someday Gerd might give lectures on yarn spinning, looms and fabric science, whether he wants to or not).

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

By the way, we are travelling through Iran. It's possible that we won't be writing posts at all or will be late. We first have to see if it works for us. And whether we can even manage to write down all the fantastic impressions in good time.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter
