Great Journey 🏴 Day 664

great journey 🏴 day 664 sheep. besides the few people and a little more

Sheep. Besides the few people and a few more Highland cows, sheep live here. In masses. Most of the sheep pastures are fenced. However, we increasingly observe that the sheep don't care about these fences. They simply jump over them or look for holes in the fence.

The grass seems much more tempting on the other side of the fence or wall. Roads are also great for a nap.

We also get sheep visits on hikes or at lonely campsites. Gerd is already thinking about taking such a small lamb as a pet because of the lack of cats. He argues with the never-ending wool, I argue that every lamb will grow into a full-grown sheep one day (with everything that makes a sheep!). So far, I'm winning these discussions, even though the little lambs are really cute.

Scotland has about 10 × as many sheep as people. Unfortunately, this too has a less romantic history. An incredible number of forests were cleared, whole families dispossessed and driven out of the Highlands. A sad chapter in Scotland, for the whole thing was not without violence. At the height of the evictions, there were 2,000 burning cottages a day!

In a 17th century prophecy by The Brahan Seer we read: "The time will come when sheep will eat man."

Loosely interpreted, it looks like this: "Since people were less lucrative than sheep, those same people were forced to emigrate, sometimes by great force."

It's all part of Scotland, yes, we know. The sheep themselves are least to blame, so we are happy about every single one here. Some look quite tidy, some super-torn, some freshly shorn. Most of them have some kind of paint stain on their backs. Sheep tattoos, so to speak!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
