"The most dangerous road in Scotland." we read. Aha, so slowly we have to be careful with travel guide superlatives. At the tourist information office they warn us that we should rather hire a small car to drive the road. The mountain pass connects the Applecross Peninsula with Lochcarron. It is one of the most beautiful but also most demanding routes in Scotland.
Right next door we meet travellers who have driven the dangerous AppleCross loop with a much larger camper (and there are so many of these huge camper ships driving around here!).
We consider and weigh facts against facts:
Felix is slim and flexible in the hips, he should be able to manage.
Gerd can drive mountain passes in his sleep.
The view is supposed to be really great.
Others can do that too.
626 MüM doesn't really feel like high alpine to us, so it's doable.
Since there is a village with a restaurant and shops back there, it must also be supplied. And certainly not with bicycles.
Because of the warnings, only a few will probably be on the road.
The weather situation is, well, what can I say, once again more than modest.
Fear-mongering exists everywhere in the world. Here about roads, there about the oh-so-dangerous neighbouring country or again somewhere else about the "dirty, unhygienic" circumstances. This has never bothered us and we have never been able to confirm it in retrospect.
We just want it.
So we make our way to the Bealach na Bà.
Arriving at the top, we ask ourselves what was so particularly dangerous there, the roads have been so narrow ever since we started driving on the NC500. The peninsula is fantastic, the view of the pass is shrouded in mist and the evening campsite halfway up is simply magnificent!
