Scotland - in search of Jamie at Doune Castle

Great Journey 🏴 Day 682

Success story: we made it! We have something like summer. We stow away our thick jumpers and dare to go outside without a rain jacket.

Perhaps my enthusiasm for the books of a certain Scottish story had taken up too much space recently. Here, in Doune Castle, it culminated in a brilliant finale.

Actually, we wanted to get out into the sun quickly and had had enough of castles, but one of those needles in my wish list attracted us (me?). Felix stopped, we were surprised: finally not a finely decorated castle, but a half-ruin. Filming location for many movies, Ivanhoe, The Knights of the Coconut, Games of Thrones and, sure, Jamie & Claire.

There are audio guides that are really well done: You choose your favourite and he tells you about the castle but also about the filming on location. So we spend a lot more time than the size would suggest, I listen to Jamie with his beautiful Scottish-English singsong and I am blown away.

And then it happens: the more I know about the filming and learn how much extra mud had to be brought into the castle, that all the interior shots had to be filmed in replica studios in Liverpool for reasons of space and that the animals that ran back and forth in the marketplace had to be constantly captured, the more the magic evaporated.

I will no longer deliberately visit film locations. It's no fun for me. It disenchants everything and leaves no room for my imagination. I realise that it's not for me.

Gerd smiles with relief, somehow he seems glad that this Outlander thing is finally off the table. For sure. Maybe. Hopefully.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter
