Great Journey 🏴 Day 685

Experience the Highland Games once in a lifetime. In the past, people actually used to talk about gatherings, this is where the clans met, where there was a lot of eating, drinking, dancing, matchmaking, dating, marrying, exchanging goods and community.

Today, the Highland Games are a little different. And, we suspect, even very different from place to place.

At half past eleven the "Famous Alva Games" begin with dances by the many girls and two boys. They are accompanied by 2 pipe players, always alternating.

Around 12, the field fills up, a bagpipe group marches in, the families make themselves comfortable in camping chairs they have brought with them. The first sports competitions start.

Bike race on grass, 80-metre run, women and men start together. Older children line up for the "stadium" run, the very young ones are supposed to dash 15 metres but leave the track when they are cheered on by their parents and no longer understand the world and run towards their mothers. Everyone gets a medal, even if the referee then has to go round all the mums.

Not to forget the heavy disciplines: Log throwing, hammer throwing and other mucki games. In a kilt? Of course!

We are most impressed by the mountain run. All the athletes, whether sporty or not, suddenly run out of the stadium to climb the 500 m high mountain (no zigzagging, partly straight up on all fours!) and back down again as quickly as possible, mostly sliding on their bottoms. Sweaty, dirty and happy hill runners arrive at the finish.

What a spectacle! The games were over by 5, we didn't see any alcohol or cigarettes. The rides were definitely suitable for children and the whole thing was a huge thing for young and old!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

By the way, we are travelling through Iran. It's possible that we won't be writing posts at all or will be late. We first have to see if it works for us. And whether we can even manage to write down all the fantastic impressions in good time.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
