Great Journey Day 697

In Birmingham - it's much more pleasant today - we do the full one-day tour number: barge trip through the canals, stroll through the city centre, visit the library and caff with the "people-watching programme".

They talk about the Venice of England here. Because of the bridges? Or the many canals? We don't know. In any case, there are narrow, long houseboats everywhere, inhabited, of course. Despite its size, the whole city centre is somehow quiet, cosy, almost a little homely.

The library is known for its architecture. Fascinated, we observe how they managed to perfectly mix the old library feeling - which we now know from the masses of visited castles and mansions - and modern architecture and conjure up something quite wonderful out of it. We are probably doing the architect an injustice with our "explanation" of his work, but nevertheless: really beautiful. Open to the public, including roof terrace and roof garden.

The shopping street is what a shopping street is: a meeting place for people who love shopping, food stalls are lined up next to each other and street musicians alternate with magicians and God-preachers. In other words, a completely normal shopping street.

Over a cappuccino, we review our short stay in Birmingham and plan the short route to the ferry: our ferry leaves the day after tomorrow and we are leaving England for the second time.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.
