Grand Tour - Ireland - Day 737

Grand Tour - Ireland - Day 737

The evening in Athlone was long. First there was a Close neck-and-neck race in the Burch house at backgammon.

Later then the Pub Tour. Since Athlone has two or three pubs close to the centre, we visited them all one by one.

Live music here, live music there. We stroll through the city, become music critics and finally end up at "Seans Bar". Rumour has it that this is the oldest pub in the world. A notice with an entry in the Guinness Book of Records seems to confirm it. Okay, another quick visit and a small drink and the usual music enjoyment. Just another Saturday evening.

Sunday will then be dedicated to history. Or, as they say as permanent travellers: under the sign of old stones.

We visit Clonmacnoise. In the 6th century, the Shannon crossed the island's east-west road axis here. So it was an excellent place to build a settlement, a wooden church and later a cathedral. Later still, the High Kings (what that is now remains a mystery to us) were buried here and at some point before or after that Clonmacnoise was regarded as a holy place. (I'll probably never be a history explainer, I can't wrap my head around the dates!)

The extensive grounds, the multimedia exhibition, a really interesting guided tour and mega-bursting sunny weather made the trip here really worthwhile.

Ireland, you're really pushing yourself in the last few metres!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

By the way, we are travelling through Iran. It's possible that we won't be writing posts at all or will be late. We first have to see if it works for us. And whether we can even manage to write down all the fantastic impressions in good time.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!

So beautiful. Clonmacnoise was my very first stop in Ireland and is therefore special in my heart to this day. We also had magically beautiful weather back then. Many greetings Christiane

Oh how beautiful! Always great how we can bring back memories. (when we read other travel blogs, it happens to us so often too!)
Kind regards - Gerd & Heike
