Czech Republic - Pekelné Doly Biker Cave

Czech Republic - Pekelné Doly Biker Cave

We almost missed crossing the border into the Czech Republic. It is so unspectacular. Right after the border we bought a vignette (and I had to strongly resist the many waffles I know from children's holiday camps!) and off we went: through the mountainous country of Bohemian Switzerland. Simply a dream!

When we set off on our big trip with our motorbikes more than three years ago, we didn't have time to visit the famous biker cave. Well, it was the year 2020, the year of the big restrictions.

This time we want to visit them, albeit without a motorbike. And have to say: "Hm, yes, it's okay!". Maybe we are missing the motorbike gene after all. Or just the beer and bratwurst gene. Who knows for sure?

Let's be honest: The bikers and also the occasional female biker all had fun. However, to this day I have not understood why one rides a motorbike into a pub. After all, you can hardly ride on with your hands full, can you?

I copied the following text into my notes years ago, read it through again today and shortened it for our blog here.

Hidden in the middle of the picturesque Czech landscape is a unique excursion destination: the "Pekelné Doly" motorbike cave. This impressive natural wonder not only offers a breathtaking backdrop, but also an exciting history.

Located in the valley between Svitava and Velenice east of Česká Lípa, the cave has industrial roots. Originally, sand was mined in the caves, which was needed for grinding mirrors and for glass production.

The special thing about this cave is the possibility to explore it not only on foot but also by motorbike. Motorcyclists can drive directly into the cave and park in front of the counter. An experience that leads through the cool and shady tunnels of the cave and is rewarded with a refreshing drink at the end.

Thanks to the natural cave climate, the temperature is constantly a pleasant 12 degrees Celsius. On hot summer days, the cave offers welcome cooling and attracts motorcyclists and nature lovers alike.

Since 2003, the "Motoklub Pekelné Doly" has been running a restaurant in the 3,500 square metre cave, which is located in a sandstone massif near the German border. When visiting, one should note the opening hours, which vary according to the season.

We only stayed for a good quarter of an hour.

But one more thing: the drive here and the whole surrounding area are definitely worth a visit: a fantastically mountainous, winding and beautifully forested area!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
