After a few really cosy days at our daughter's, which we spent painting the fence, demolishing the shed and barbecuing extensively (it seems to be part of the building process!), we feel the urge to leave for a few days.
I have the pleasure of giving a three-day training course for a customer in Rostock, and we use this opportunity to spend a whole week at the Baltic Sea.
Of course, our route takes us past one of my childhood memories: Karl's strawberry farm. We let ourselves drift, marvel at the loud and colourful hustle and bustle, buy heaps of strawberries and all kinds of other sweet strawberry-style treats and are simply happy.
We quickly realise that we are here on a Sunday: we are truly not alone. Half of humanity seems to have gathered here today. Towards mid-morning, we set off again, away from the noise and stress.
Off to Rostock. Our intended pitch turns out to be unusable: instead of spending the night romantically at the city harbour, admiring the sunset in the evening and letting the bread rolls glide past us, we find ourselves standing in front of a construction fence. The Hanse Sail starts next week, and preparations are in full swing: funfair and fair everywhere.
Nevertheless, we manage to find a really quiet place to sleep. A three-minute journey to work is something to be proud of, isn't it? We spend the evening at the harbour after all, with atmospheric music, great food and cosy company. We meet up at the pop-up restaurant. Here we learn that we should definitely go to Heiligendamm. I see. We'll probably do that, because tips from locals are always good. But I only ever associate Heiligendamm with this luxury hotel and the G8 summit. Should there really be something there for us where we can stand free and sit comfortably by the Baltic Sea? We'll see.
But first we work and then explore the city in the afternoon. We discover a fountain with revealing sculptures - the people of Rostock affectionately call it the Pornobrunnen - walk through the old town and dine in cool restaurants. We spend the evenings at the city harbour again. The summer of 2024 is just great, the sun sets more spectacularly every day and the harbour slowly fills up with the most beautiful, mostly wooden sailing boats for the Hanse Sail.
My heart beats faster, I feel really at home here. And the best thing is that we're about to arrange a date for another workshop here. Rostock, we'll definitely be back. Thank you for these wonderful summer memories, you marvellous city! But this year you'll have to celebrate the Hanse Sail without us. Probably the next ones as well, because Tralalala and Rumsdibums are not ours anyway.
Merci for "travelling with us
