Germany - Summer Festival at the Solingen Blade Museum

Germany - Summer Festival at the Solingen Blade Museum

We visit Olaf and Annette, two long-time friends and loyal Pupi-mit-Wanderer. They "lie" on the way, their driveway is Felix-worthy and so we move onto their farm for a night.

We are spoilt with rhubarb cake, sit in the garden all afternoon, talk, knit and "save the world" a little. We sweeten the evening with Hitstera music rate game. And I realise once again what a messed-up and unsuitable taste in music I have.

Of course, as always and in all parlour games, I am more of a decorative accessory than a winner and perhaps only an enrichment. But I still have fun. Needless to say, Gerd is far ahead again!

In the morning Olaf sets up his outdoor workshop for me, finally I can drill into my driftwood from Tunisia and Greece, the shells from Scotland and Ireland too. If all goes well and I find a few missing natural beauties (currently at the Baltic Sea), I'll make a rattling but no less pretty mobile for our summer house on wheels. But: only what lasts will be good. So it's still a case of wait and see.

Olaf and Annette live near Solingen, and I have long been attracted to the Klingenmuseum. Gerd is so moderately impressed by my idea ("Why does she always want to go to museums?"), Olaf and Annette want to come along. (Is it just kindness towards their guests or is it genuine interest? We'll never know, at least I don't ask them).

When angels travel, the sun and happiness are with them

...my dad used to say. He is right if we assume that we are angelic. But who isn't? You just have to bend the truth to suit yourself, don't you?

So: back to the topic of luck: on the aforementioned Sunday, the Blade Museum has an open day, summer party in the garden and a public guided tour without registration. What luck! We'll stroll through the museum garden, listen to a violin and a piano concert, eat vegan bratwurst and potato pancakes with applesauce from the volunteer fire brigade, immerse ourselves in the history of blades and fill our store of useless knowledge about the history of blades. So if you're bored at a party, book us now: We know a lot about knives, swords, blades, cutting, sheaths, cutlery and so on. Unfortunately, our brain remembers such things rather than important dates or names. You can't choose what sticks, can you?

We sweeten the end (and unfortunately also the farewell) with large ice-cream sundaes. And we realise: 2023 will be our ice cream sundae summer!

What a great weekend! And what a gift to have friends everywhere!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
