Great Journey Day 629/3

NationalTrust, the third
At the end of our Sunday excursion, we find ourselves in a sweet little town called Lavenham, which was built in the Middle Ages and seems to have been forgotten since. Historic Lavenham, to be exact.

Lavenham Guildhall is one of Britain's finest half-timbered buildings and reflects the great wealth of Lavenham's early 16th century heyday.

The Cloth Guild (again, my novel knowledge comes in handy) was one of the richest in and around London. Here in Lavenham, many half-timbered houses are simply still standing. As we walk through the rooms, there are creaks everywhere. We have to pull our heads in to avoid bumping into them and the floors are anything but flat.

I am excited about the many embroideries we find everywhere here. When my enthusiasm is noticed, I am told that these embroideries are all of Irish origin. They themselves don't know exactly how they got here. But really: I don't care at all. I would love to get an embroidery frame right away and start embroidering. If it weren't for this space issue.

In the garden of the old money house we find many old dyeing plants such as woad, from which the famous blue cloth has been dyed for centuries. The fact that the plant blooms yellow, however, well, a miracle of nature or a trickster who uses not the flowers but the leaves for dyeing!
