This region of Greece is completely unknown to us. We have never read about it in any travel guides, nor have friends or acquaintances ever told us about it. We only remember travelling through here about a year ago because we also took the ferry in 2023. And even then we said: we have to go here again.
We are now in a magical area (we are always fascinated by mountains) and the Ionian Sea, which is probably part of the Mediterranean and merges into the Adriatic further north - we don't know exactly - looks simply marvellous. The beaches are made of white pebbles, the sea shimmers turquoise to light blue depending on the sunlight and the many bays make us feel like Robinson Crusoe. Good, with a connection to civilisation.
I find a parking space in a bay, to which a single-lane winding road almost five kilometres long leads. I hope no one is coming towards us, I think. And then we are overtaken. All right, an exciting experience, but probably more for the person overtaking.
Once we reach the bottom, we find ourselves in a beautiful bay. We park at the side of the reeds because we don't want to obstruct the view of the local hotel guests. Of course, we're also allowed to chill out in the hotel and round off the day with a breakfast in the morning, also with a dream view and excellent service. We spend the night in our Felix directly on the beach. The sound of the sea included.
We lie on the beach all morning, actually go for another swim - albeit more with endorphins due to the cold than out of joy - and at some point it's time to leave. Because tomorrow morning, very early, our ferry leaves and even more importantly: Switzerland is playing in the Ice Hockey World Championship. And for that we need excellent internet reception, because Gerd has decided to "help" the Swiss team, as he says.
I now have flyers and brochures about Epirus in my "I still want to read this" drawer. Because one thing is clear: we'll be back.
Merci for "travelling with us
