Hungary - Serbia - Bulgaria and we do it again: Greece

To cut a long story short, instead of landing in Turkey, our house on wheels has been parked on Greece's beaches for days.

We use Sunday, as the motorway in Serbia is also truck-free, to speed through the country. Not exactly speeding, Gerd has been driving much slower recently, which I really like. Then there's no more of this constant braking and accelerating when overtaking. Just my pace, I love it. It's good for knitting and listening to audio books.

Serbia not only shone with empty roads, but also with drizzle. I don't remember how long we travelled through Serbia, but it must have been four or five hours: Drizzle. A soft, misty grey drizzle. View: zero.

Then just before Bulgaria: blue skies, a hint of sunshine! I look at the weather app and see: The route via Greece would be even more lucrative than travelling across Bulgaria. From a sun and weather point of view.

First, however, we look for a parking space in Sofia, find only noisy places, turn around and end up in a small town on a university car park with a cool café and sunshine. How practical: we can spend the next two days here. Because it's the working week again.

Unfortunately, the nights are a bit sleepless and the university car park turns out to be - shall we say - a meeting place for the sexes. In the morning, there are drinks cans, tissues and all sorts of other "stuff" lying around everywhere. But before the car park fills up in the morning, the city cleaners come and remove the traces of the night.

At some point, these two days will also be over and we think one last time: Bulgaria > Black Sea coast > Turkey or Bulgaria > Greek Aegean > Turkey?

I look at Gerd, make a quick "meow" and he drives onto the motorway towards Thessaloniki without a comment. The decision has been made. Whether it was the weather or the view of the cats, I'll never know!

On the way south, we stop once again in Melnik. Here, we rememberIn 2021, we emerged from the coronavirus lockdown in Greece into an almost coronavirus-restriction-free Bulgaria. People on the streets, cafés open, people without masks and, after five and a half months, a huge liberation for us. (Here is our Podcast to this)

But Melnik is in hibernation today, so we have a snack, remember the place in spring and stroke the many cats. We refuel with water, gas and AdBlue and we're off again, the blue and white border flag flying! Once we arrive in Greece, we are drawn straight to the central peninsula of Chalkidikis. But more about that another time.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!

Do I just not see it, or is there really no menu item "Cats" on your website? 😆
