Iran - The Chahkooh Canyon on the island of Qeshm

The Chahkooh Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the island and a marvel of erosive power. Here we discover a fascinating landscape of sedimentary rocks formed by erosion. The name "Chahkooh" is derived from four wells that the locals dug in the past to access the precious fresh water below the canyon, which must have been a very valuable commodity in this hot and dry environment.

We (and many other visitors) are surrounded by natural halls, holes and amazing figures on the walls of the canyon, formed by wind, rainwater and strong sunlight. The walls of the canyon show erosion caused by the acidity of the rainwater (acid rain? Here too?), which over millions of years has led to ever larger holes and finally to natural halls and verandas.

To reach the canyon, we have to drive for kilometres through beautiful terrain. We see a few cars in the car park for the first time. The holiday season in Iran is approaching. Gerd looks for a shady spot. Unfortunately without success. But he wouldn't be him if he didn't at least try. He parks next to a leafless bush 50 centimetres high and tries to convince me that it will grow. "I see," I say. "I'm really looking forward to it."

In the gorge itself, we feel like we're in an Indiana Johns or Star Wars film (I almost wrote Star Trek). We are in a completely different world, with bends and curves everywhere, and we can easily imagine how the water whipped through the passages here years (centuries, millennia?) ago.

But today everything is dry, no water. But lots of people and a hand pan player. The sound of the music is wonderful, although we think you could actually enjoy nature without music. But here it fits quite well. We're all buoyant as we stroll back and finally get into our overheated Felix, which unfortunately isn't in the shade.

But the best thing: in the evening, two camels smile at us from afar. Well, if that's nothing else!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
