Italy - In the snow over the mountains in Parco dei Nebrodi

Italy - In the snow over the mountains in Parco dei Nebrodi

I want mountains! I want to hike! Come on, let's go to the National Park "Parco dei Nebrodi"!

Wished, drove and sobered to realise that we are here at the wrong time of year.
The road up into the mountains is magnificent. Once again I am grateful for my Swiss mountain pass driving pro. Hairpin bend after hairpin bend, he spirals our Felix up the mountains, only to descend again on the other side of the mountain with just as many bends. This goes on for hours. The view is magnificent, a new, enchanting view after every bend.

The route takes us right across the north of Sicily. What we didn't think of, however, is that the little clouds back there are slowly coming closer. That means we drive higher and higher and the clouds turn into fog. And, what clouds do when they are bored, they make it rain. Or, high up in the mountains, they make it snow.

My husband ignores the mandatory winter tyre signs, reassuring me with: "We have snow chains with us." Good, I trust him. What else can I do?

In the deep fog we only see leafless trees and a few wild boars, hopefully successful in their search for food. To be on the safe side, we stay at a sufficient distance, lest they take a liking to us.

The higher we go, the more we think we are in the Swiss mountains. There is no end of snow to the right and left, the first ski tourers emerge from the fog. We stop and ask how much further up we have to go. They reassure us that we have just reached the Spitz and now it's all downhill. Thank God!

By the way: In Switzerland I'm always totally annoyed when the guests drive up the wintry passes with summer tyres, it's all so dangerous! Now we are "the tourists" ourselves! How perceptions change...

After countless bends we arrived at the bottom, so we visited the Parco dei Nebrodi in the fog. This is also worth another visit at another time of year.

At the sea we find a small, beautiful campsite and sum up: It shouldn't have been, it wasn't good. Not good at all. And we send a few extra greetings of gratitude to "up there".

Addendum: I must have been so tense that I hardly took any photos, but I only noticed this in the evening when I was sorting the pictures.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!

And because of the touring tyres:
Every one of us has been unreasonable at one time or another. 🤷
Cé la vie....🤣
The main thing is that you arrived safely at the bottom. 👍

With emphasis on "try"! 🤣😂
I should learn more today.
You make an effort. 😇

But of course I understand you.
I certainly wouldn't have felt really comfortable either. 👍

Kind regards from Racheli
