When someone goes on a journey, he can tell a story. - Yesterday it happened again, that unpredictable, unplannable thing: In the middle of nowhere, after several kilometres on the bikes, after countless potholes and rough stretches: The gift of the day, I was invited to participate in the lessons of a primary school. Actually, I just wanted to stretch my feet. Give my butt a rest and drink one of the little waters at the side of the road. And then this: A man shows me that I should go into the house back there, he indicates with his hands that they are writing there. I enter and see beaming faces. Laughing, lively children. All shouting "Sabaidee!" I clasp my hands in front of my chin, nod and greet everyone likewise with "Sabeidee!" Our hearts meet. Somehow this works with smiling eyes. The teacher invites me in. The kids move together and the teacher steels. Somehow I must have stumbled into the singing class. Because now the children start to sing. I have the feeling they are singing to me. I could burst with happiness. It's similar to what we do here: the girls all sing with their hands and feet (I only recognise the word sabeidee now and then, which means good day) and the boys mostly move their lips without making a sound. They rather look. Watching my camera, which I try to hide. I don't want to ruin the moment. We can't communicate, no one speaks one of my languages, I don't speak theirs. But there is one language we all understand: the smile. After a while of small happiness, I am allowed to move on, to the next classroom. Again, the same, although the kids here seem older. They are doing their arithmetic. The teacher is very friendly, but I notice that I am disturbing his lesson. The kids look more at me than at him. I say goodbye to them and leave the teacher alone with the lively gang. One more look into the music room and also then here a thank you in Lao "khokhobchai lailai" and I'm out. - - I can't remember seeing so many beaming children in Europe's schools.
