In Laos, schooling is compulsory for 6 years, which is not always observed by the rural population. Girls usually drop out after 4 years because they have to help at home or in the fields. About 75% of the over 15s can read. But I don't see anyone reading here. I hardly see books and newspapers here. Okay, we are in the countryside, in the mountain villages. It will be different in the cities. And yet: it seems as if time stands still here. There would be so much time to read here. Unfortunately, here too, as apparently everywhere in Asia, people prefer to swipe on their mobile phones, not a trace of reading. - - I don't want to presume to measure by European standards, but I find it hard to bear that the children here have to work so hard from such an early age. The women here in the mountains have an average of 4-6 children. Most of the children are part of life here, in the shop, in the fields, doing the laundry. We see many children playing, running, laughing, waving, helping and frolicking with the many animals. - - I am delighted by the harmony that shows itself to me. But I don't know if it is a real harmony. We don't have access to it. Nevertheless, a child's face is always beautiful to see. And the fact that life here takes place outside and not inside is something I can only welcome. - - Leben pur!
