Switzerland - With our children to Valais

Switzerland - With our children to Valais

Our son didn't used to be a big hiking fan, but now he's even more so. "Shall we go to the mountains?" he asks when we arrange to meet up for the weekend. Of course, I already have an idea: to Valais.

Perhaps some of you here already know that Valais is one of our favourite parts of Switzerland, alongside the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden. If not, you can never be in Valais enough. The dialect alone is a dream. I could listen for hours, even if I don't always understand everything. If you want, you can listen to a small sample here: Klaus Petrus is my favourite Valaisan. (Not only because of his dialect, I especially appreciate his work).

So we pick up our son and his partner early in the morning and head back up into the mountains. First to Kandersteg. On the car journey to Goppenstein, we have breakfast at "Casa Felix" and as soon as we arrive in the Lötschental, we set off on our hike. Always towards the Langgletscher. Past mountain lakes, along the ice-cold glacier river. "I know my way around, follow me!" I say. Unfortunately, I have no idea and lead our small group into the deepest undergrowth and thickets. Forwards or backwards? Both would be hard labour. So our son takes the lead and navigates us out of the bush. Well done again.

We enjoy the time together, the leisurely hike and the wonderful conversations. We take breaks along the way and keep refilling our water bottles at the mountain streams.

At some point, we return to our Felix, which has been transformed into a sauna - which we don't need at the moment. All windows and doors open and some fresh air please. Do we want to cook or even bake? In view of the heat, we decide to go to a restaurant, cosy on the terrace under parasols and with cool drinks on the tables.

Oh, what a lovely family outing, what a wonderful time together!

Well, the journey back to Bern takes a little longer, we hadn't reckoned with the Sunday evening traffic. We've probably been travelling too long and too often in areas where traffic jams and heavy traffic are foreign words. Well, we'd better get used to lots of cars again, why not? If we have family and friends around us, it's worth it!
