Tunisia - El Djem for the second time

Tunisia - El Djem for the second time

Instead of looking out of the window, holding his nose in the wind, my gadget-loving husband pulls out his smartphone. Today is the most beautiful day, the weather is great, the sun shines for 8 hours!

Yes, dear friend, what is this supposed to tell us?

Beach, tranquillity, a chat, or a swing into history after all? Muslim high culture had it in Kaiouran, dromedaries right by the roadside. Well, a few more old Roman stones?

She nods. She doesn't have to drive. She gets back into our Felix, I crawl into the rear passenger seat and off we go to El Djem.

The sun is shining in the most beautiful afternoon light, Gerd squeezes our Felix through the narrowest streets thanks to the creativity of our sat nav (visitors-I-show-everything mode?) and already we are standing in front of the Unesco World Heritage Site El Djem (I have already written about it in detail here).

Our "chauffeur" leaves us alone, we get the last tickets for today for the usual 12 dinars. The gates close in an hour, so we have another hour in the evening light to ourselves. We climb the steps, stroll over the viewing terraces and disappear into the catacombs of the historic replica of Rome's Coloseum.

Again we are almost the only ones in the complex, again we are "overwhelmed" by the size of the building and its incomprehensible history. And besides, we can both spend hours together without getting bored.

Outside the now closing gates, our Felix is waiting with Gerd as the world's best chauffeur to drive us back to Sousse in the most beautiful sunset. There we treat ourselves to a quick look out of the hotel window (not bad, right?) and fall dead tired into our beds.

Maybe there will be sun again tomorrow.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
