Tunisia - Escaping the weather at full throttle

Tunisia - Escaping the weather at full throttle

The weather is and remains incredibly stupid.

Actually, we wanted to make ourselves comfortable in Tunis and spend a few nice days. We stand on the minutes-short sunshine beach, even meet "our" Hungarians again and think about what to do. Carthage in the rain? The old town of Tunis in the rain? Only the Bardo Museum, because it's covered, would be an idea.

And then I hear an interview with Karl Lagerfeld, who says in an aside: "If you're completely honest with yourself, you always know the question and the answer, so to speak!"

The question is clear: What do we do? We still have a few days until our friend comes to visit us in Sousse. How do we use the time? What else do we want to see? And again the thought comes up: we need a break. Always after 6 to 8 weeks we feel the travel fatigue. Take up something new? No, not really. The 10th medina is then also "just" a medina. The 11th bazaar is then also "just" a bazaar.

So, the question is clear. And the answer? Actually also. Nature and tranquillity, please!

A glance at the map, a quick nod and we pack up our car. We quickly get some engine oil (by the way, it's not that easy in Tunisia for our high-tech Felix!) and refuel.

Off onto the motorway. Past towns we know: Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir, Sfax, Gabés. Here we quickly turn off and roll the last few hours towards the desert.

Feeling the sand once more, perhaps seeing dromedaries once more and above all feeling the silence. The desert has enthralled and enchanted us so much.

So much so that we manage the almost 600 kilometres in one day. At noon we get into a small sandstorm, in the evening we drive like Lucky Luke into the probably most beautiful sunset and in the deepest night (ok, it already feels like night at 7 o'clock when it is simply pitch dark) we are back in Douz.

We quickly spend the night at our favourite campsite "Cinderella" and look forward like mad to the days in the desert. Because from tomorrow morning we will feel peace again. And dive deep.

We look forward to it. We are actually longing for it.

Desert, here we come!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
