Tunisia - Farewell to the Desert

Tunisia - Farewell to the Desert

Bloody axe: The desert makes it really hard for us to let go of it. We just don't want to leave here.

Years ago, when we heard lectures about the magic of the desert, sorry, we couldn't understand the magic. And our hearts were not really touched by the stories either.

Now we stand here and understand what they tried to tell us years ago. Now we know that the desert will always remain a place of longing. And I secretly make the plan to be here again next winter. And at the same time we know that our plans always end amusingly: somewhere completely different.

Once again we enjoy homemade sand bread, watch the sun rise and set - this Sahara sand-soft coloured firmament alone - and on top of that we meet herds of camels again.

Now, a few days later, as I write this, tears come to my eyes with emotion and gratitude. We lie in bed together and look - God, how touching - into our own memories and realise that we were allowed to experience so many beautiful things everywhere! The idea of giving a talk or writing a book grows stronger. Simply because it is so nice to revel in one's own memories.

Back to the camel herd. The shepherd tells us that of the 120 dromedaries in the herd, there is only one male dromedary, otherwise there would be big trouble. And when the male camel kids reach puberty, they have to be separated from the herd. Oh, somehow it's the same everywhere.

We stay with the herd until we can see almost nothing and enjoy the fellowship with them in the approaching night. A little later, in complete darkness, we trudge to our Felix and sleep deeply in the desert for the last time.

The morning brings us frozen dunes once again. Slowly we roll north. There are tears in my eyes, more than once we call out "Bye, desert". (We always do this, we always say "bye" when we leave cities, countries, special places - we have become a bit cranky by now).

Of course, the camels also say goodbye once more. We have to stop, they are crossing our path. Oh, how we love to stop. How we like to soak up once more the feeling of being allowed to be here. Sometimes we really have to pinch ourselves to realise that we are really doing all this. That we made the decision to take this step 6.5 years ago. That we dreamed about it for years and then set off two and a half years ago. Exactly for moments like this.

And was it worth it? Yes, every single day!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
