Tunisia - From Djerba to the mountains

Tunisia - From Djerba to the mountains

On the way to Douz, I read something about an underground mosque. Of course we plan an extensive visit here. And know that the way to Douz, where we want to spend Christmas, will probably take a little longer.

"Here, between kilometre marker 34 and 35 should be the mosque," I call out to Gerd, he turns (somewhat unwillingly) onto a bumpy road and after two minutes we are standing in front of the mosque.

I quickly change, tie my scarf around my head and button my blouse. We don't see a soul for miles. However, we don't see an active mosque either. The whole visit takes about 2 minutes, the mosque turns out to be a "mini-sightseeing" and only 3 minutes later we continue on the small bumpy road towards the Sahara.

A little later: a highway-smooth road leads us into the mountains. To the right and left of the road the vegetation becomes more and more sparse, I inform Gerd that we have to pass through the mountains back there. He, however, thinks that these mountains are still days away. You can be so wrong.

Now comes the romantic part: we drive into the mountains at sunset and can't take any more joy. Once again we realise: we are mountain people. As long as the horizon doesn't reveal everything, we feel good.

In Toujane we find a nice spot at a small café, where we can spend the night. We are greeted with the usual mint tea. We play a round of SkipBo and then scurry off to bed.

The night? Yes, we had a lot of the night. Music at night, loud donkeys, lots of meowing sheep and very (very!) early in the morning the muezzin and a little earlier the roosters, who seem to have important things to say to each other across the valley. Tired, I make myself a coffee (and hope it works!) and we set off: the Sahara is calling.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
