Tunisia - "Old acquaintances" around the campfire in Kebili's ruins

Tunisia - "Old acquaintances" around the campfire in Kebili's ruins

After the beautiful farewell to Douz and the desert, we are now heading north again. North again!

In Kebili, we first visit the oreedoo shop for fresh internet and a little later the famous Kebili Oasis. The former successfully, the latter actually also, but we don't really think we are in the right place.

But: We find another highlight. In the middle of the ruins of the old town of Kebili, there is a French van we know. In Hammamet, on Djerba, in Douz, in Ksar Ouled and now in Kebili we "drive" across each other's paths. Like us, they zigzag through the country. Adame, the son of the two, is already running around. We hear him before we see him.

Ruin and oasis suddenly no longer play a role, we drink tea together comfortably in a sweet café, order another Berber pizza (which also has an Arabic name, without vowels, so unpronounceable for us) and slowly stroll back to our little rolling houses.

Arriving at the empty site, the gentlemen collect firewood, we place chairs around the fire and a wonderful evening of chatting begins. Christophe and Sabrina speak English. A blessing for me, at last Gerd doesn't have to translate simultaneously. The fire made of dried palm fronds and trunks bathes our remote campsite in a romantic light. And of course it attracts one or two interested visitors.

First the police call in. "Everything is fine, welcome!" A little later the tourist police. "If there's anything wrong, here's our phone number!" A small interruption then by a local who has clearly had too much to drink and wants to warm up. So far, so good. Only he wants to entertain us loudly the whole time, in a French-Arabic mix. Not so cool. At some point he gets on his scooter and rattles off. It's good that we're not participating in road traffic today.

The evening will be long. And cosy. Sometimes you just meet the people you immediately like.

We also spend the morning chatting (I still had a video conference, but everyone else enjoys the time together). The hottest news about solar panels, charging boosters, dry separation toilets, life without a permanent home and hair care products for longhairs are discussed. Sometime around noon, we all leave, only to firmly resolve to meet again! Because: We realise that we are taking the same ferry to Palermo.

And by the way: since then we've been in the active group chat, exchanging information about pitches, weather outlooks, massage options in the hammam and invitations to couscous dinners!

PS: I have deliberately pixelated Adame. The ladies at the "pizza oven" have given us their okay.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
