Tunisia - The Djerbahood Art Project

Tunisia - The Djerbahood Art Project

Djerbahood is a colourful street art event that first took place in Erriadh in 2014 (and again in 2022). Conveniently, the synagogue is in the same town and so we combine two destinations in one day.

In this project, several houses in the old town of Erriadh were painted and designed by artists from all over the world. Djerbahood itself was an initiative aimed at promoting and revitalising the cultural heritage and art scene and supporting economic development by attracting tourists and raising public awareness of the arts and culture.

I'll put it this way: we made it! We are here. Even though we are once again very lonely tourists, we enjoy wandering through the narrow, colourful and lively streets.

First of all, I finally find organic olive oil and buy a litre bottle. Then, the friendly saleswoman is so nice, she sells us some pomegranate-almond jam that mum made herself. A dream.

In the alleys, the beautiful typographic works of art inspire us. We both love the Arabic characters (and no, we can't decipher any of them!). And when they are drawn so tastefully and harmoniously, as they are here, we are in typographer heaven.

Later - we treat ourselves to a nice lunch right on the main square - the olive oil and confi seller "catches" me again. Are we really living in this van? Full time? Very gently she asks me if she could take a look? Sure, I'd love to!

She quickly locks up her shop, which is hardly visited anyway, and explores our Felix. She has never been in a camper. In the summer months, she sees these big cars from time to time. And she has always wondered what it would look like inside. She looks into the kitchen, oh, there's the cooker. And the bed, here's the bathroom, oh, with a shower! She is completely delighted.

How do we do that with the water, and the laundry? That must be very expensive, a van like that, isn't it? Here we are a bit speechless for a moment, what do you say to someone who earns on average only a fraction of what we earn in (monetarily rich) Switzerland?

We remain honest: yes, quite expensive. But we work and we consume little money. The answer seems to be enough. The waiter brings us our lunch, she herself goes home for a little lunch break. And we are once again so happy to meet people with open hearts.

Thank you Tunisia!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!

I find the murals very impressive, they tempt me to explore the whole place. I lived in Aleppo for two and a half years, and your recent pictures and descriptions remind me a lot of that.
I wish you a blessed Christmas in the distance! Thank you for all the interesting impressions! - What am I giving away for Christmas? A Norwegian jumper, of course, made of Icelandic wool!!! 😀
