Turkey - From Lake Van to our friends in Batman

Turkey - From Lake Van to our friends in Batman

After we got so lost yesterday - the most beautiful journey we've had in a long time - after we had to drive the route twice because we didn't make the last pass, today we start all over again at Lake Van.

First there's a new haircut for Gerd (I always have my travelling hairdressing salon with me) and extensive sunbathing with shorts, open hair and a short-sleeved shirt: freedom somehow.

Then we continue over the aforementioned mountains, but this time on a kind of motorway - why not? It's much easier and more comfortable and Felix doesn't have to exert himself so much. Actually, he only deserves smooth roads now, so he rolls well and Gerd has recovered enough to be able to drive our home again.

We talk about our first impressions here in Turkey. Yes, we need to learn to signal again. Then our eyes won't have to constantly scan the carriageway for huge potholes. And I can knit again, which was often not possible when driving in Iran: there was a risk of losing stitches on the bumpy roads. We can simply drive to any petrol station again and yes, what a luxury, we can simply withdraw money from the machine, from our own card. We recognise all the letters again, we can read everything again. But we don't understand anything again. Shouldn't we finally learn Turkish?

Halfway to Batman, we find a nice place to spend the night and, as could be otherwise in the Kurdish part of Turkey, we are invited back. For tea from the military, for a barbecue from a school class and for breakfast the next morning again from the military. The weapons stand quietly in the corner, the bread is fresh, the tea tastes good. Tea is much stronger in Turkey than in Iran, so we have to reduce our consumption somewhat. Otherwise we won't be able to sleep, we realise.

We leave around midday, our friends don't come home from work until the evening, but we know where the key is and of course we can make ourselves comfortable in the house and garden. Gerd can finally stroke all the cats again. And we know: It's going to be a nice few days!
