Bulgaria - Panoramic road from Melnik to Bansko

04 May 2021

Great Journey 🏍 Day 243
We drive through the Pirin Mountains. And we can immediately add another tick to our Unesco World Heritage wish list.

We already had no idea about Greece. But Bulgaria was so far off our radar. Okay, Black Sea coast, yes, that means something to us (I've actually been there before, when I was 17 or so).

However, neither of us had realised that there was an impressive mountain landscape here. That will change now, we'll let ourselves be surprised. The route along the panorama road from Melnik to Bansko (tip from the hotelier in Melnik) lives up to its name. The mountains are completely overgrown here, but in the distance we always have the snow-covered peaks of Vihren, Kutelo I and II and Banski Suchodol in view. All mountains above 2800 m.

The road meanders along the Nestos River until we eventually arrive in the winter sports town of Bansko, the Bulgarian St. Moritz. Here we find a place to spend the night and decide to study the Bulgarian "Haute Volaute" for a few days and work on Monday, as usual.

We use the time for an extensive and long wish list. Once again we buy a paper map so that I can keep track. We mark all the possible places we would like to visit. The way I see it, Bulgaria has a lot to offer.
