Turkey - My very special hero in Cappadocia

23 July 2021

Great Journey 🏍 Day 320
The day of the hero. My hero's.
My boyfriend is afraid of heights. At night he still tells me he's not coming on the balloon ride. Not what I want to hear.

I wish so much that he would come with me, that we could experience the moment in the air together. At half past three in the morning, he just stays in bed, doesn't want to come. I persuade him a little to come to the start, at least for the photos. I hope he will change his mind. In the shuttle bus I give him a few "all's well that ends well" drops.

And then we stand on the launch field, 110 balloons have permission to take off on this day. The loud blowers blow a lot of air into the balloons, some of which are over 60 metres high. At some point, our balloon is lined up, the basket is ready for boarding and we climb in. Both.

The fire-breathing fan lets us take off. We ascend quite quickly, I lose Gerd from my focus, tears roll down my face with emotion. Such a "once in a lifetime" moment. This peace in the balloon, this weightlessness, this incredible nature and the beautiful balloons all around.

At some point I realise that I'm not alone, photos are being snapped en masse everywhere. Gerd stands next to me, I hold him and he enjoys it as much as I do. A little shaky, but both are grateful that we can experience this moment together.

The balloon trip ends far too quickly, we land in a field, get drunk on non-alcoholic Blümchen sparkling wine, receive a certificate (yeah, we had successfully escaped the certificate world after all!) and are back on our roof terrace for breakfast at half past seven.

What a start to the day! What an experience! What a beautiful world we are allowed to travel through.
