Greece - Dimitsana, in the highlands of Arcadia

24 April 2021

Great Journey 🏍 Day 234
Our way leads us to the north. And since we don't like to drive on the motorway, we go
through the mountains. Even though that was not the original plan and we "only" wanted to take the country road parallel to the motorway.

Happened. We must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. But as Robert and Barbara always say? "Do we still have time for a shortcut?"

Now we've gone from little roads to little streets and at some point we actually end up in Dimitsana. Dimitsana is a village in the highlands of Arcadia, it's early evening and it's getting chilly. Not to say arse cold. Gerd warms his paws on the handlebar heater, I'm once again looking down the tube.

Shortly before we arrive, however, we receive an e-mail that our booked room has been cancelled because of something. Great. I phone another hostess, but she has no more rooms available. But she knows someone. He in turn has no rooms, but knows someone. It goes on like this for a while until I can book a room after all.

We receive a friendly welcome, Gerd takes his first ouzo on the street, move into our little room under the roof, explore the town. The village, that is.

The only taverna provides us with Greek food to go and the supermarket has the Greek chocolate bars that we like so much. So instead of getting bogged down in a taverna (which won't be possible again until May), we sit under the skylight, look up at the church tower and eat from the assiette. We know romance.

Gerd is still feeling the effects of the long drive (or was it the ouzo?), he collapses backwards on the sofa, on which he was sitting anyway, and falls asleep almost immediately.

But the best thing is: we are on the road again. It feels so wonderful!
