We should definitely go to Andermatt, our Airbnb slumbering mum enthuses. So let's do it. In the warm evening sun, we wander through the town, which looks like it has been swept clean. Where have all the guests gone?
For me, Andermatt has never been a centre of attraction, more like a transit town to get to the Oberalp Pass or a fashionable ski resort. We have never stopped here. Besides, I was rather put off by the reports of modern hotel buildings and the expansion into a huge, even bigger, even more modern ski resort for wealthy ski-fun tourists.
But, as always: everything has two sides. The old town shines for us and shows itself from its (almost kitschy) Swiss side. And once again, my heart is pounding with a sense of home. (Which, by the way, it always does when I'm in the mountains).
The people here speak a beautiful Swiss dialect. Höchstalemannisch, I learn. We stroll around a bit, absolutely have to try the blueberries with cream, and as the sun slowly sets and we feel chilly, we are drawn into the warm room. Because: tomorrow we will hike, and until then we have to mobilise all our strength.
