Greece & the mysterious mail

Great Journey 🏍 Day 100
Greece & the mysterious mail
We will again drop our Christmas-New Year's mail into the familiar rust letterbox. But first we get confirmation that it is still in operation.

While we are queuing for stamps at the post office, we observe something exciting. In the post office building, criss-crossed everywhere, are boxes of bundled letters. And people are calmly rummaging through the stacks, leafing through letter after letter and picking out the letters addressed to them. Once they have gone through a stack, it is passed on to the next one. They look for another one themselves. And the search continues.

We did not see boxes or piles sorted or labelled in any way. All the letters are just bound together somehow.

We watch fascinated for quite a while. So if we were expecting a letter, we would have to come here and rummage through all the letters once. A highly exciting phenomenon for us. Here, quickly picking up the mail means rummaging for one or two hours. Every day.

Tomorrow I'll ask our snooze mum if she does this every day.
