Germany - Zittau and the Zittau Mountains

We visit Zittau on the way to Berlin. The surrounding landscape of the Zittau Mountains offers us a great autumnal backdrop. The picturesque hills and valleys are a delight and we are already looking forward to the mountains in Switzerland.

I'm back here in Zittau after more than 30 years. I only really remember one thing: the hollow chocolate factory where a friend of my mum's worked and we were allowed to take home faulty products or packaging: a true paradise for me.

Unfortunately, the girlfriend and the factory no longer exist.

Nestled in the border triangle of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, the city offers a different kind of great experience for us.

The lovingly restored buildings in the old town centre are particularly worth seeing. The market square with its characteristic town hall is the heart of the town and reflects its rich history. We visit the Zittau Lenten cloth, an important work of art from the 15th century, and have breakfast at the Schwerdtner bakery. Here we sit and listen to the dialects. Zittauerisch sounds very special, a bit like a foreign language. The waiter is blessed with a Berlin snout and Berlin manner, we stay far too long and enjoy the conversations we overhear.

In the afternoon - did breakfast take so long? - we stroll through the town. We admire the Zittau flower clock, with bells on genuine Meissen porcelain and a gentle chime every quarter of an hour.

Autumn has arrived, somehow we are still in the summer feeling and realise that we have dressed incorrectly. So we finish our little walk in Zittau in our Felix, actually consider switching on the heating for the first time, but abandon the idea again and drive to a dream spot on Lake Berzdorf.

Here we enjoy the view, the peace and quiet, look at what might be on offer in Görlitz tomorrow and fall happily and tiredly into our nests.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
