We have been travelling through a green landscape again for days, accompanied by rivers full of water. This includes the Karun, which flows in or rather around Shushtar.
The water mills of Shushtar are a central element of the ancient water management system and a good example of the engineering skills of the Sassanid Empire. The mills were part of an extensive network of canals, dams and tunnels that diverted the Karun River for urban water supply, irrigation and the operation of the mills.
The water mills in Shushtar used the natural gradient of the terrain and skilfully constructed canals to channel the water to the mills with sufficient pressure. The water drove large water wheels, which in turn moved the millstones in the mills. This technology enabled the inhabitants of Shushtar to grind grain efficiently, which was crucial for the local economy.
The layout of the canals and mills along the river was planned in such a way that they could work efficiently even at different water levels. The engineers of the Sassanid Empire must have had a deep understanding of hydraulics.
Today, the water mills of Shushtar are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important tourist attraction.
We actually wanted to stay longer in Shushtar, but unfortunately we arrive in the early afternoon when it is almost 30 degrees and the sun is blazing. And we realise that the last few nights of sleep are making themselves felt. We are simply totally exhausted. After a short tour of the complex, a cosy coffee break in a caravanserai and a medium heat exhaustion, we head out of the city. Peace, fresh wind and sleep, lots of sleep, beckon.
