Slovakia - Herľany Geyser, the cold and especially lazy geyser

After two beautiful and busy days at Zemplínska šírava, the largest reservoir in Slovakia, I read about a geyser in Slovakia. A cold one, but a geyser all the same.

Slovakia - Herľany Geyser, the cold and especially lazy geyser

We have to see that, of course. We read on the internet when the earth will next spit. We look at the clock: it's this morning! So let's go.

At the end of the 19th century, a deep artesian borehole was drilled in the area in search of further mineral springs. At a depth of 404.5 metres, a powerful spring with strongly mineralised water was discovered. Even though the geyser was in action more often and more powerfully in the past, today a fascinating spectacle can be observed about every 32 to 34 hours. The water shoots up to 20 metres high, ejecting around 600 hectolitres of water for 20 to 30 minutes.

While we wait with many others on site... and wait... and wait... we read what is actually special about a cold geyser:

This one belongs to the cold-water geysers, a special form of artificial carbonic acid springs. Like their natural relatives, these springs emit their water as impressive fountains at regular intervals. The secret behind it? Effervescent carbon dioxide, which, similar to the bubbling of a freshly opened mineral water bottle, propels the water upwards.

After two or three hours of waiting, we give up: We drive on. Even though the spa park is very beautiful, we don't want to stare at an empty fountain for days. Košice is calling us, probably one of the most beautiful cities in Slovakia.

Goodbye, you cold and above all lazy geyser. For anyone who wants to take a look (and for us, too): There are lots of videos of the fountain on YouTube!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
