How often in life do you say "Uppsala"?
I never realised from the occasional stumble that Uppsala is even a city.
On the ride north, the city invites us to take a breather and shines with a fat cathedral and a castle. We take a look at the cathedral, and afterwards the cathedral café invites us for a fika. From this point of view, driving breaks on the endless road north are a little amusement.
The Gothic St. Erik's Cathedral is, incidentally, the highest cathedral in Scandinavia and, what's more, many coronations and funerals are held here. While we reverently learn about the history and admire the architecture inside the cathedral, we have to discuss the succession to the throne in the café.
Gerd is repeatedly amazed at my level of knowledge about Europe's royal houses, the future Swedish queen and her fitness trainer, er, prince consort. We digress and browse through Gala, Bunte and other content-heavy websites to check facts.
Of course, I could now say that I work too much in yellow press publishing houses and that this is collateral damage of my profession, so to speak. But that's not true. In my early years (and sometimes still today), colourful magazines and glitzy stories about people I don't really care about have to be my entertainment for a coffee break.
In the course of our research, we learn, for example, that the succession to the throne in Sweden was changed by law because only women are at the starting line and that this was not at all welcome until the 80s of the last century.
So, matter-of-factly, back again: the cathedral is really impressive, but it doesn't inspire us for more than a feet-walking break. We want to continue, as we hear the call of reindeer and moose more and more clearly.
