Switzerland - Night sewing sessions

Switzerland - Night sewing sessions

The phone rings. It's our son. "Mum, can I borrow your overlock machine?" And shortly afterwards: "Oh, Mum, can you maybe help me with something right now?"

You can borrow everything from me. We are happy to give. But my overlock machine and my sewing machine? Hm, that's a bit of a sanctuary.

So a little later we are sitting in Gerd's mum's kitchen, the sewing machines adorn the table, lengths of fabric, ribbons and all kinds of sewing kit all over the floor. We have to have dinner on the balcony, there is no more room for plates in the kitchen.

Gerd's mother, who is not used to such a sewing chaos, is irritated and leaves the action in the direction of the living room. Gerd and our children have known such "order" of cutting and sewing for years. There is something lying around everywhere, only in chaos is the artist creative!

Our son wants to sew bags and sell them at a flea market. For weeks we fiddle around together, thinking about closures, reversible options and material mixes. And then it starts: he starts, we support. He has the ideas, I carry them out. The three-year apprenticeship as a ladies' tailor a hundred years ago must be good for something.

We repair his sewing machine, I show him how to thread a three-thread overlock and what is important when sewing jersey. He in turn impresses me with his creativity and his will to be ready the next evening. Because what I already feel, he doesn't feel yet: we are far behind schedule.

On the second evening, Gerd comes to help, and the three of us actually make it. Completely overtired, but happy, we all fall into our beds.

On Saturday, we visit him at the Flohmi and are delighted to see that half of the bags have already been sold. In the evening he will write to us that he has found enthusiasts for all the bags.

Days later, looking through the pictures, we realise: selling the bags is secondary. We had so much fun in the evenings together, designing and sewing. The time together, the creativity we experienced together, the fulfilling handwork and the view of our happy son are worth so much more than any "thing" in the world, even if they are handmade bags!

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!

A beautiful story.💖 You are absolutely right, happy time together is the most important thing.
But the bags are really cool. Chapeau to the son for the idea. 🙋🏼‍♀️
